The first meeting of the new board of the National Library of Ireland took place on 24 November 2015 and Conor Kostick, from Nottingham’s Department of History was present. Conor’s primary research project is on medieval weather extremes, but he has retained an interest in Irish history arising from his work while at his former institution, Trinity College Dublin.

The new board was greeted by the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys, TD.

Conor says, ‘naturally, it’s a great honour to be involved at this level with such a wonderful and important Irish cultural institution. I was also very excited to learn about the projects that are underway, including new physical structures for the library, 1916 commemoration projects, and a major exhibition of the Seamus Heaney archive.

‘I was also delighted to meet fellow board members with similar interests to mine and there is a Nottingham connection here. The Nottingham-based Sherwood Foresters were rushed to Dublin in 1916 to fight against the rebellion. The battle of Mount Street Bridge saw the heaviest fighting of the Rising and over a hundred Sherwood Foresters were killed or wounded. This battle has now been reconstructed on a virtual platform via a project led by Susan Schreibman.’
