Applications are invited for the above post based at the Department of History in the School of Humanities. The successful applicant will be joining the ERC-funded 'Cultures of Occupation in Twentieth Century Asia' (COTCA) Project, led by Dr Jeremy E Taylor. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading Stream 3 ('Spaces of Occupation') in COTCA. The candidate must also undertake a case study on 'Spaces of occupation' in colonial Malaya and/or Singapore, developing and undertaking a research project on the late colonial presence in British Malaya from a spatial perspective.
The successful candidate will have access to approximately 11,000 euros in travel and subsistence costs for fieldwork, funding for making publications produced from and during the project Open Access (Gold Route), and funding for some travel to international conferences during the project.
Candidates must hold a PhD in a relevant field (eg, history, historical geography, Asian studies, etc) or be close to completion of such a PhD. The candidate must be able to speak, read and write English fluently. The candidate must have experience of conducting research in the field of spatial history or historical geography, and must have experience of conducting research in or related to East or Southeast Asia. The candidate should preferably already have published in outlets of appropriate quality (or have had work accepted for publication in such outlets). It is desirable that the candidate has had experience in organising workshops and/or conferences, and has had experience of building and/or maintaining digital archives. Experience of using GIS is also desirable.
This full time post will be offered on a fixed-term available from 02 July 2018 until 30 June 2021.
Hours of work are 36.25 per week.
