Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships 2020: Call for Expressions of Interest from the School of Humanities

woman-writing

Early Career Fellowships (ECF) from the Leverhulme Trust are designed for early career researchers, with a research record, who have not yet held a full-time, permanent academic post. Fellows should undertake a significant piece of publishable research during this three-year tenure with a host institution.

The School of Humanities is inviting Expressions of Interest in archaeology, classics, history, philosophy, music, religious studies and theology, for stage one of the internal application process. Successful candidates will receive support and mentoring in completion of the final application.

Interested applicants should submit a 1-page document outlining their fellowship project idea and a short CV (no more than two pages). The deadline for Expressions of Interest to receive support for your application is 4 December 2019.

Overview of the Early Career Fellowship

• Approximately 100 Fellowships will be available through the Leverhulme Trust in 2020.
• All candidates must hold a doctorate or have equivalent research experience by the time they take up the Fellowship.
• Fellowships are tenable for 3 years on a full-time basis.
• The host institution will be expected to fund at least 50% of the overall Fellowship cost.
• The primary aim is to undertake a significant piece of publishable research, therefore the project put forward should not be a reworking or mere extension of the candidate’s doctoral research project.
• Applications will be considered in all subject areas with the following exceptions: studies of disease, illness and disabilities in humans and animals, and research that is intended to inform clinical practice or the development of medical applications. The Trust excludes these areas because substantial funding is available from other sources for applied medical research, and the Trust’s priority is to support investigations of a fundamental nature.

Leverhulme Trust’s criteria to prioritise work of outstanding scholarship:
• Originality—the research achieves more than the incremental development of a single discipline.
• Importance—the work will enable further research or enquiry.
• Significance—the proposed research has relevance outside a single field, and is able to excite those working in other disciplines.
• Merit—the quality of the research design and methodology, and the suitability of the researchers and institution for the realisation of the proposed research objectives.
