About the session

Looking to further develop your literature searching skills and knowledge of resources to find relevant information for your research?

This session will focus on advanced literature searching skills and techniques, and will explore a range of databases and specialist resources in your subject area to help you search effectively for your research.

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • source key UoN resources, subject databases and specialist information within a discipline to employ a thorough literature search

  • construct effective search strategies using appropriate terminology and database functionality to facilitate retrieval of relevant literature

  • use alerting services to keep up to date with research in a specific discipline

  • employ critical skills to evaluate the authority, reliability and validity of published literature

  • navigate off-campus access routes to a range of eResources

  • appreciate the benefits of using and contributing to open access resources

  • identify relevant services which enable access to resources beyond the University to extend research

  • recognise the value of reference management software (RMS) to manage reading and enable effective and consistent referencing
