Message from Chris Jagger, Chief Estates and Facilities Officer

The following information is provided as a helpful update to the campus disruptions in the Engineering/Science areas caused by the tram and contractor activity.

Tram – the bridge across the A52 will be put into place this Saturday night with the A52 being closed overnight. All will be completed by c6am on Sunday morning and the road re-opened.
The contractor will also be opening up Science Road as an exit only from campus as of the 30th September – this will be the permanent arrangement – along with white lining of the A52 alongside the campus to create better traffic flow into campus on Coates Road. This will be signed “Uni Only” on the road itself, but is not being identified as a main entrance to the University.

Works will continue on Science Road over the new year with occasional short closures but we expect to receive reasonable notice for this.

With regard to the South Entrance, there will be further closure at some point in relation to installation of the track itself (the previous closure was for services diversions) and we are working with the contractor to minimise impact where possible.

Significant tram updates are posted on the loop message of the day but we would also direct you to the tram website which is updated regularly (http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/about/visitorinformation/tram-development/nottingham-tram-development.aspx).

Alternative Parking – the Medical School car park is scheduled to be brought back into our use by the end of October which will alleviate some issues. In the meantime additional car parking has been made available at University acquired property (ex-Mansell Office) at 522 Derby Road, which is available for all permit holders to use.

Additional parking will be constructed by the tram contractor on the site of the former nursery building at Science Road but this is unlikely to be available for use until Summer 2014. Some parking will also be reinstated to the rear of the Arts Centre but again likely to be summer 2014. Unfortunately further parking has been lost this morning close to L4 and this will be a permanent loss. There have been numerous contractors on site over the summer but the level of building work has now decreased at the start of term and parking bays used by these contractors will be available for staff permit holders with effect from 30 September.

Scaffolding to Coates - this is now being removed and is expected to be cleared by 1 October 2013.

Excavations on Coates Road - this is nearing completion and the contractor will be off site by the end of the week.

New Library Works and associated pedestrian diversion routes – information on revised routes is available at http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/estates/images-multimedia/esl-site-routes.jpg. A temporary library space “George Green Plus” has been established on C floor in the Physics Building to provide additional computer room and meeting room/quiet study areas to minimise the impact of the construction works to library users. The library project is a major development which will be on-going for 2 years. The contractor has erected hoardings around the working area and will use off-site parking and scheduled times for deliveries to ensure that users of the George Green Library and surrounding buildings are as unaffected as possible. During the library works there will be no pedestrian access between the A floor south entrance to Pope Building and George Green Library. There are signed diversion routes in place.
