Abstract:
Many well-known conjectures, such as the Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for elliptic curves, predict that special values of L-functions encode arithmetic information. One of the most powerful tools in attacking these problems is the theory of Euler systems. I will give a brief introduction to Euler systems and how they are used, and describe some new results (joint with Sarah Zerbes, building on earlier results of Sweeting) in which we obtain new arithmetic applications by combining Euler-system theory with the set-theoretic notion of ultrafilters.
