Statistics Professor Wins Award

Ian Dryden, a professor of statistics and international expert in shape and image analysis, has recently returned to The School of Mathematical Sciences in Nottingham after a period at the University of South Carolina in the USA.

Professor Dryden has been awarded a prestigious ‘Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award' which will support him in establishing a research group in ‘Object Data Analysis’. His research involves the study of highly structured data, such as images and geometric shapes.

The information contained in these datasets is highly complex, requiring new methods of statistical analysis, and will be motivated by a wide range of applications, including analysis of medical images, e.g. MRI scans, and comparing proteins in bioinformatics research.
