General Surgery
We can offer projects across a range of disciplines including HPB, colorectal, general and breast surgery set across to campuses in Nottingham and Derby.
GI Surgery is embedded within the NIHR Nottingham Digestive Diseases Centre which is part of the NIHR BRC. We have a strong research environment with a weekly research team meeting where the Academic Clinical Fellows (ACFs) and PhD students present their work, and we also run a monthly Journal Club.
Alfie Adiamah, a previous NIHR ACF, has completed his PhD on risk of surgery in patients with cirrhosis this year. One of our current ACFs, Alastair Morton, was recently awarded an NIHR Doctoral training fellowship studying variations in the use of FIT testing in England in the diagnosis of colorectal cancer. Chris Lewis-Lloyd has been awarded funding from Guts UK to undertake database work on the consequences of living with an ileostomy.

"Hi, I'm Chris an ST2 ACF in General Surgery. I studied in Nottingham and loved it so much I stayed in the region and completed my PhD here. I enjoy Parkrun, films and spending time with my wife and cats.
"My research involves using national routinely collected data from England, combining primary, Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), and secondary, Hospital Episode Statistics (HES), care data to form large cohorts of patients.
"Currently I am interested in assessing the effect ileostomies or small bowl stomas have on long term conditions including osteoporotic fractures and kidney disease. Also, leading on from my PhD work, setting up a pilot trial examining the effect of extended venous thromboprophylaxis use in benign colectomy patients in relation to venous thromboembolism development against bleeding risk."

"I’m David, an ST1 ACF in General Surgery. I was ranked 7th nationally in the CST selection and completed my Academic Foundation Programme at St. George’s Hospital in London.
"I enjoy outdoor activities and the charm of smaller cities, which influenced my decision to pursue the ACF post in General Surgery in Nottingham. The city offers a great work-life balance and proximity to nature. Nottingham also provides a wide range of academic opportunities, including surgical epidemiology and laboratory-based research. Additionally, the East Midlands region provides excellent clinical training, ensuring that academic trainees like myself can develop the essential operative skills alongside our research endeavours.
"My primary research interest lies in the gastrointestinal area. Currently, I am working closely with my academic supervisor to identify the most suitable focus that aligns with both departmental priorities and my skill set. Our goal is to secure funding to pursue a PhD in this area upon completion of the ACF."
