Facilities

Each of the academic schools have their own enviable facilities to support teaching and learning.

There are lecture theatres, both within academic schools and in purpose-built teaching buildings, which hold anywhere from 60 to 450 students at a time . The lecture theatres are state-of-the-art allowing lecturers to make the most of the latest audio-visual technology in their teaching. Small, flat-floored rooms throughout campus allow larger lectures to be supported by problem classes, seminars and workshops. Fully equipped teaching labs within each schools give students access to cutting-edge equipment and instrumentation for use during practical classes. This includes laboratories for materials science in Archaeology; Geography laboratories for physical and chemical analysis of samples; teaching laboratories devoted to inorganic, organic and physical chemistry; experimental laboratories in Physics and specialist laboratories across the Biological and Environmental Sciences to allow for a range of practical activities from biochemistry to genetics, molecular biology to plant science. In some subjects practical elements may be computer-based and many schools have their own dedicated computer labs, in addition to University-wide facilities, which provide students with access to any software and specialist IT equipment they require for those subjects. Common space is available in each of the schools for the students to use between lectures ranging from simple seating areas to fully equipped study rooms with access to text books, computers or other resources.

Nottingham has 8 libraries located within the UK with 3 based at University Park. The libraries house a wide variety of books, journals and other publications for students to use but also provide access to a wealth of electronic information via NUsearch. Each library has space for silent, independent work, areas for group study, including bookable rooms, and somewhere to get refreshments.

IT Facilities

There are computer rooms conveniently located around the University's campuses including one in each library. Workstations are connected to the University’s data network and each computer room has at least one laser printer and many also have laptop plug-in points. Wireless access is available at more than 500 points across campus including computer rooms and public areas of many teaching buildings.  Some computer rooms are open 24/7 providing students with continuous access to IT facilities.

The Language Centre provides a broad range of high quality language classes and services to support language learning.  Due to the nature Natural Sciences students are unable to take languages for credits but they can enrol on paid-for modules as part of the advantage award or as evening classes.  In addition all students at the university can join the Self-Access Centre for free which gives them access to facilities to support language learning through taught classes or self-study.

Accommodation

Nottingham offers an accommodation guarantee to students which means that providing they meet the conditions they are guaranteed a room in University-arranged accommodation during their first year. The accommodation available at the University can be divided into two categories; catered and self-catered.

There are 12 catered halls located on University Park Campus and 2 located at nearby Jubilee Campus offering a variety of different room types.  The cost of catered halls includes 19 meals a week and rooms must be vacated out of term-time.  There are 4 self-catered residences near University Park all of which are located off-campus but are within easy walking distance although some have a shuttle bus if you prefer not to walk.  As with catered halls there is a range of room types available, but no catering is provided and students have facilities to make their own meals.

All accommodation sites provide students with access to facilities for laundry and bike storage and have support available day and night on site in the form of wardens and hall tutors.  Each accommodation site has its own student reps who organises the social life of the hall and their are common areas at each site for students to use for study and socialising.

For student who prefer not to live in University-arranged accomodation there is plenty of private sector accommodation available in the residential areas around the campus.  Help and advice on finding private sector housing is available through Unipoll Nottingham, a charitable service for student housing that offers a comprehensive online property search as well as landlord accreditations to ensure standards of quality for students.
