* Henry was originally thought to have come from the Lathom branch via Richard Stanley of Ashton in Makerfield. According to Peter Edmund Stanley’s “House of Stanley” (Pentland Press, 1998) – who dedicates a Chapter to him, it is most likely he was the illegitimate son of Sir Rowland (Roland) Stanley of Hooton, as a special provision or bond was made to his eldest son – also Rowland – by William Stanley of Hooton in 1612.
** Thomas Wharton, son of Ellen Stanley, married his 1st cousin Elizabeth Stanley but remarried Abigail (Henrys mother) after Elizabeths death.
