Encounters with big beasts! Nottingham University Business School hosts an evening of special guests from the wildlife industry

Wednesday, 12 March 2025

What is it like to come face-to-face with a lion, be attacked by an angry seabird, or experience the countdown to the live television outside broadcast Springwatch? To celebrate the first anniversary of the University of Nottingham’s Sustainable Travel and Tourism Advanced Research (STTAR) Centre, a special evening of guest speakers will be sharing these anecdotes and outtakes about their ‘Encounters with Big Beasts’ on Monday 17 March.

Former BBC Natural History Unit Producer, journalist and Nottingham University Business School (NUBS) Special Professor, Stephen Moss, along with Dr Rob Lambert, University of Nottingham Environment Ambassador and Vice-President of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, will share their fascinating experiences from being on both sides of the camera.

With stories on what it was like to direct the comedian and birder Bill Oddie, filming with television presenter Michaela Strachan in Antarctica, or working with the legend that is Sir David Attenborough, guests are guaranteed an entertaining evening of stories and behind-the-scenes insights and outtakes. With helpful guidance and hints and tips on how to succeed and deliver in the creative process, the event will end with an interactive Q&A session.

Over many years of travelling across the world, I have encountered several natural historians and scientists, photographers and journalists documenting wilderness in its many facets and appreciated the work that is behind the camera. Having the opportunity to learn from the fascinating stories of two world leading experts is just an exceptional way to celebrate the first Anniversary of our STTAR Centre, and I am very much looking forward to what will no doubt be an entertaining and inspiring session!”
Marina Novelli, Professor of Marketing and Tourism and Director of STTAR Centre

The STTAR Centre will also welcome Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust (NWT) to this celebratory event to share details of their biggest ever listening exercise at Attenborough Nature Reserve which focussed on how people wish to engage with the site and any barriers found around visiting and engagement. They will talk about the challenges of managing these sites and their increasing focus on using the flagship reserves as a springboard for environmental action.

The event which runs from 6-8pm at Nottingham University Business School (NUBS), B52, Business School South, Jubilee Campus, is free and open for all to attend, and can be booked here.
