Ultimate Frisbee World Championship comes to University of Nottingham

Thursday, 06 July 2023

Two University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) students have been selected as part of the Under 24 Chinese National Team for the Frisbee World Championships.

The tournament, which is taking place from the 2nd to the 8th July at the University of Nottingham, will see teams from Canada, America, Australia and beyond compete.

Four UNNC students were selected to the national team, with two travelling to campus for the event. The four students were 吴函泽 WU Hanze, 杨旻熹YANG Mingxi, 张珂源 ZHANG Keyuan, and 高书樵 GAO Shuqiao.

YANG Mingxi, a final year student at UNNC, said: “The teams we’ll be facing are very competitive. I feel a little nervous before the competition, it’s a very intense competition and will be a challenge I have never encountered before. When we are on the field, I hope we can try our best. We won’t focus particularly on the medals but we want to learn from our competitors and bring that knowledge about frisbee sport back to China.”

Hosted by UK Ultimate, players from across the world will be competing in the women’s, open and mixed divisions of the sport, with teams from 24 nations expected to take part.

Colin Stromsoy, Director of Sport and PE of Nottingham University Ningbo, said: “UNNC delivers an exceptional experience, to make students and help them become the best athlete they can be, at the same time as ensuring that they succeed academically, making sure they leave UNNC with a first-class degree and a first-class sporting experience.

“Four of our students have been chosen to play for the under 24s Ultimate Frisbee World Championships. The Chinese ultimate frisbee team is very young in its development, so they’re going to be coming up against teams from across the world that are really experienced, that have been playing the sport for many years. But it’s a fantastic experience to be a part of something like that and they’ve worked exceptionally hard to become part of that elite team that’s going to the UK and the pride of representing China.”

The Frisbee World Championships will be held at the University of Nottingham until July 8.
