Description

On Monday 9 March, the Centre for the Study of Subversion, Unconventional Interventions and Terrorism will collaborate with the Taiwan Research Hub to host a pre-publication discussion with Dr Andreas Fulda

The event will take place 2-3pm in A02 Highfield House, University Park. All are welcome to attend, no registration necessary.

Pre-publication discussion: What if China attacks and Taiwan falls?

This is the worst-case scenario and counterfactual history at the heart of Andreas Fulda’s forthcoming German-language book Wenn China angreift. Ein Szenario (C.H.Beck, 2026). Once confined to niche security panels, Taiwan’s vulnerability has entered mainstream debate. Beijing’s repeated military exercises around the island prompted The Economist to call it ‘the most dangerous place on Earth’. Xi Jinping’s determination to incorporate Taiwan – by force if necessary – leaves little room for political compromise, especially given Beijing’s longstanding rejection of self-determination for any territory it claims as its own.

In this pre-publication discussion Dr Andreas Fulda will address four critical questions:
1. Why is the status quo in the Taiwan Strait no longer sustainable and the risk of escalation so great?
2. What happens to our prosperity if a naval blockade begins, which in the worst case ends in an attack on Taiwan?
3. What would a possible fall of Taiwan mean for the freedom of the West?
4. And, perhaps most importantly, what can be done to prevent a war in the Taiwan Strait?
