Asthma Care quality improvement tool latest upgrade

This version brings improvements for practices using Read V2 clinical systems (EMIS Web, INPS Vision and Microtest)*. Now data can be extracted for all asthma drugs on each prescription, affording a more accurate picture of each patient's medication and providing clearer medicines management. (In the previous version only one item per prescription was extracted with the results data).

More accurate reporting on medication has also improved the reporting on British Thoracic Society (BTS) asthma treatment steps 1-5 within the results, which can help with treatment strategies for patients.

BTS treatment steps are calculated using prescription data from the last six months, except for short-acting ß2 agonist (SABA) inhaler presecriptions which are calculated using data from the last twelve months.

Medication compliance and changes in prescriptions need to be considered during analysis of the results data from this quality improvement tool, due to the calculation being based only on prescription data. As with all PRIMIS tools, the Asthma Care quality improvement tool is designed to signpost practices to patients who may be of interest and/or concern and not to replace clinical decision making.

Information on the Asthma Care audit tool

* For TPP SystmOne users

We are working towards a solution to enable SystmOne users to extract more than one item per prescription. SystmOne users will be informed as soon as a solution is found, but in the meantime a SystmOne-only version of the tool is available along with an accompanying instruction booklet.

For all users

Please read more on our dedicated Asthma Care quality improvement tool page, which includes the useful Quick Guide and the instructional booklets , instructions on how to obtain the audit tool and a little more detail on the tool itself.

The development of the Asthma Care audit tool has been funded by Boehringer Ingelheim. Boehringer Ingelheim has undertaken a medico legal review but PRIMIS has retained editorial control and intellectual property rights for this audit tool.

Availability

The Asthma Care audit tool is free to use for any practice that is a member of the PRIMIS Hub membership scheme, including free basic membership.
