Who are we?

Founded in 2000, PRIMIS began with a mission to support general practitioners and their teams in adopting IT and embracing electronic health records (EHRs). Our early work focused on overcoming barriers to implementation, improving data quality, and helping clinicians see IT as an integrated tool for patient care, rather than a separate administrative task.

Twenty-five years on, this foundational work has helped transform primary care data in UK general practice into a powerful resource. Today, this data not only enhances individual patient care but also plays a vital role in national public health initiatives, informing policy decisions, driving quality improvement, and supporting research-led healthcare advancements.

At PRIMIS, we are proud of our legacy and remain committed to pioneering innovative solutions that unlock the full potential of primary care data, ultimately improving healthcare outcomes for all.

The work that PRIMIS undertakes supports:

  • clinical decision-making and patient care
  • public health surveillance and disease prevention
  • population health management
  • quality improvement
  • health research and policy development
  • digital health innovations
  • operational efficiency and resource management
  • scale and spread of the outputs of research

Core Expertise

For 25 years, our expert support for diverse projects with healthcare providers, researchers, and policymakers has enhanced patient care and improved clinical outcomes.

Clinical code groups and data modelling

  • Provision of clinical code groups in SNOMED CT and medication codes in dm+d customised to meet customer requirements. Our code groups are crafted by clinicians (PRIMIS Clinical Advisers) who bring valuable, context-specific insights into everyday healthcare practices, ensuring precise and accurate code selection. We also update existing code groups to reflect scheduled updates in coding systems and incorporate new clinical insights as they arise.
  • Provision of logical business rules to provide a structured framework for implementing clinical code groups, ensuring they are used effectively and contribute to accurate, high-quality data. This avoids frequent pitfalls in collating and interpreting data.
  • Creation of complex information models to support the development of population health management, clinical decision support tools and other digital artefacts.

Primary care data extraction and analysis

  • Development of searches, reports, and other mechanisms to gather data from source systems, such as GP IT systems.
  • Running of searches and reports within GP IT systems and secure transfer of data to agreed locations. With consent, PRIMIS can remotely dial into GP practices and perform data-gathering exercises on their behalf or publish searches and reports directly to their GP IT systems and schedule them to run.
  • Development of analytical tools to post-process data from GP IT systems to support cohort identification, case finding and the analysis of outcomes data. The tools are designed to be used in situ, meaning that sensitive patient data remains in the GP practice, and only summative data are transferred to the agreed location.
  • Provision of comparative analysis services, enabling healthcare organisations to benchmark performance, identify trends, and drive data-informed improvements in patient care and clinical outcomes.

Applying research findings to real-world settings

  • Advice and guidance on the complexity of applying research findings to diverse, real-world patient populations, and working with researchers to identify and build solutions enabling the implementation of research findings.
  • Refinement of clinical code groups designed for research purposes but require adaptation for use within a real-world environment.

Training and consultancy

  • Clinical and informatics expertise to support early feasibility decisions, including design considerations and an assessment of deliverability in UK general practice.
  • Guidance on potential sources of data, including whether data sources already available will meet your requirements or whether a new dataset needs to be obtained from a source system.
  • Developing and providing training sessions, resources, and ongoing support, helping you to make the most of the data and tools available.
