PRIMIS is a specialist team of health informaticians within the School of Medicine. We provide expert advice on the intelligent use of primary care data to the NHS, academics, and industry partners.

Our work is not just about data, however. Our tools and training programmes support behavioural change in general practice, often involving the widespread scale and adoption of healthcare innovations.

We:

  • provide consultancy advice on the availability and accessibility of data within primary care
  • provide clinical coding sets and data models (data specifications) to support primary care data extraction, reporting and messaging activities
  • provide health informatics support to partner organisations
  • advise on the design of research studies involving the use of data from primary care
  • facilitate the clinical evaluation of, and help to, establish an evidence base for healthcare innovations in clinical practice
  • guide academics on the scale and spread of healthcare innovations
  • develop tooling for use within GP clinical information systems, including system searches, data entry templates, and targeted alerts to support routine and opportunistic interventions
  • produce tooling that processes the data output from system searches in the form of tables, charts, visual representations, graphs, and other styles designed to help GP practices quickly understand how to improve, measure, and monitor patient care
  • partner with other organisations on the deployment of digital tools in their software solutions
  • manage large-scale comparative analysis services, enabling GP practices to compare their data with other practices in their locality, region or nationally
  • provide training and educational resources to support quality improvement activities
  • are advocates for better data quality, records curation and digital skills development in primary care
