An updated version of the GRASP-COPD quality improvement tool is now available to all users of PRIMIS CHART.

Marking #WorldCOPDDay (observed on November 18th each year), this update aligns the GRASP-COPD quality improvement tool to the NICE quality standards for COPD in adults. This release also includes functionality improvements to the CHART worksheet.

Five statements outlined in the NICE quality standards for COPD in adults are relevant to the use of the GRASP-COPD quality improvement tool, and practices can now usefully monitor performance against:

Statement 1: Diagnosis with spirometry [in the casefinder element of GRASP-COPD]

Statement 2: Inhaler technique [in care management]

Statement 3: Asssessment for long-term oxygen therapy [in care management]

Statement 4: Pulmonary rehabilitation for stable COPD and exercise limitation [in care management]

Statement 5: Pulmonary rehabilitation after an acute exacerbation [in care management]

Upgrade to the latest version of GRASP-COPD quality improvement tool

Anyone already using the GRASP-COPD quality improvement tool can easily apply the new upgrade by visiting 'Check for updates' within CHART.

More on the GRASP-COPD quality improvement tool

GP practices can make a positive contribution to the improvement of the quality of care their patients with COPD receive by using the free GRASP-COPD quality improvement tool. This quality improvement tool even has the potential to save lives by ensuring earlier intervention and treatment and encouraging optimal treatment.

The GRASP-COPD quality improvement tool is part of the GRASP suite of tools developed in partnership with NHS England Sustainable Improvement Team.

Further details can be found on the GRASP-COPD quality improvement tool webpage

There is also a case study on a project to use GRASP-COPD in Walsall CCG

Obtain the GRASP-COPD quality improvement tool

The GRASP-COPD quality improvement tool is a free, easy-to-use tool that assists GP practices to interrogate their clinical data, enabling them to improve patient outcomes, reduce costs and avoid inappropriate treatment for patients with COPD.

It is free within NHS England for all members of PRIMIS Hub and members can obtain this quality improvement tool via 'Check for updates' within CHART. First time users will have to apply for access (granted by NHS England) via PRIMIS Hub before it can be used.
