SOLARIS: Subsumptive Optimization for Layered Additive Real-time Industrial Systems 

Subsumptive Optimization for Layered Additive Real-time Industrial Systems” (SOLARIS) aims to achieve a further step towards truly flexible real-time manufacturing for smart products based on Additive Manufacturing technology in conjunction with optimisation-based design changes.

This collaborative project between the Centre of Additive Manufacturing (CfAM), Automated Scheduling, The Computational Optimisation and Learning (COL) Lab and the Mixed Reality Lab (MRL) will create novel products with efficiency and in real time – with proposed work taking some of the MRL’s existing projects such as GIFT and Mixed Reality Storytelling as it’s starting point.

The project will develop a fresh understanding of the AM workflow as a process that covers not only manufacturing considerations but also the life cycle of smart products, ranging from design specification, building scheduling and machine preparation to manufacturing execution and the use phase of the product itself.
