Biography
I work in the area of applied linguistics, corpus linguistics and TESOL. More specifically, I focus on the acquisition and use of vocabulary by second/foreign language learners, with a particular focus on phraseology. In the past, I was actively involved in the development of large-scale language assessment tools for English Language Learners in the USA. My other interests include corpus-based linguistic analysis, the status of English as a global language, distance learning and digital pedagogies.

Recent Publications
While I mainly teach on the MA programme via distance learning (the recently launched innovative MA in Applied English), since August 2022 my new role is the Deputy-Director of Postgraduate Taught Courses (PGT), with a focus on enhancing the student experience of all MA students in the School. My teaching portfolio includes modules on second language acquisition, research methods, corpus linguistics and TESOL. I also supervise MA & PhD projects, with my current students exploring topics such as the acquisition of formulaic sequences, the effectiveness of blended learning and CALL, and the application of corpus methods and tools in analysing L2 learning and use.
Current Research
I am currently working on a manuscript focused on corpus-based research into the notion of collocations; its publication is scheduled for 2023. Another recent project is Vocabulary Theory, Patterning and Teaching (Szudarski & Barclay 2022, Multilingual Matters), a volume that showcases the current state of knowledge in the field of vocabulary studies. In 2022, I also co-authored a volume called Digital Teaching for Linguistics, which provides both an introduction to digital pedagogy and a discussion of technology-driven teaching practices related to online and distance education (Gregory, Norledge, Stockwell & Szudarski 2022, Routledge).
I also participate in two international research projects underscoring the importance of replication studies in SLA. By testing L2 learners across different proficiency levels, learning contexts and languages, we aim to explore the effects of attention and input on language acquisition and performance, as related to reading and listening comprehension, incidental learning of features such as collocations, and learner perceptions of specific pedagogical treatments.
In the past, I was actively involved in research on language testing. Through my work at the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) in Washington, I gained experience in the development of large-scale language assessment tools for English Language Learners in the USA.
For a number of years, I have been a member of the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL). In 2021, I was elected an ordinary member of the BAAL Executive Committee. Further, I have also been a member of the Coordinating Committee of the BAAL Vocabulary Studies Special Interest Group (in years 2018-22 as Treasurer and since 2022 as Convenor).
