On Wednesday, 20th November, Life Imprisonment Worldwide presented their project publicly for the first time at the annual conference of American Society of Criminology.
A full thematic panel session of the conference, which was held in San Francisco, USA was devoted of their first research findings. Georgie Benford provided a statistical snapshot of the international life sentenced population in the G7 and BRICS countries. Catherine Appleton followed this up by considering the international use of life without parole sentences.
Finally, Dirk van Zyl Smit concluded the panel by discussing issues around the extradition and deportation of life-sentenced prisoners. Professor Jonathan Simon of UC Berkeley acted as discussant for all three papers.
