Professor John Jackson presented a paper on The Rise and Fall of the Traditional Jury in Europe at a workshop on Juries and Mixed Tribunals Across the Globe: New Developments, Common Challenges, and Future Directions. He also chaired a small group discussion on lay participation and democracy.

The workshop was held at the International Institute for the Sociology of Law in Onati, Spain from 12 – 13 June 2014. Delegates from a number of countries including the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia, France, Germany, the UK, Russia and Spain discussed issues such as the jury as a political institution, juries and democracies, jurors in the age of the internet, practices and innovations cross-country, avoiding juror bias and lay participation in mixed tribunals. It is hoped that the papers will be published in the peer-reviewedOnati Socio-Legal Series.
