Teresa Castle-Green - Infrastructuring in IoT design work

In this talk I will discuss the findings from a recent ethnographic study conducted as part of my PhD. The study investigates the challenges of design practice in relation to modifying a well established, commercially managed, IoT alarm solution. As part of this I will unpack the ways in which an industry based project team undertook a process of infrastructuring to share knowledge and surface tensions experienced within field trials. I will also highlight the working up and use of notions of infrastructural state as a resource for design reasoning when considering changes to both the technology and the installation processes undertaken by field engineers.
