NILSC security group meeting

On 20th February 2014, law and politics colleagues and postgraduate students gathered for the NILSC Security Group.

Christy Shucksmith, PhD Candidate at the School of Law, gave a presentation entitled, 'The Fallacy of Democratisation: Human Insecurity and United Nations Peacebuilding'. The presentation aimed to provoke and encouraged the attendees to be critical of the human security agenda and UN democratisation practices.

The group was well attended and Ms Shucksmith directed a discussion on the issues raised. The group considered the following questions:

  • Is 'human security' a sensible measure of the ‘success’ of post-conflict reconstruction?
  • What should the UN focus on when rebuilding?
  • What are the alternatives to the UN approach?
  • How far can humanitarianism take us towards human security and sustainable peace?
