Ancaster Hall

Welcome to Ancaster Hall JCR website at the University of Nottingham!

About Ancaster

What facilities are available in Ancy Hall for students? This page aims answer just that! It may also help you plan what you need to bring to make yourself at home. We have tried to list everything we think is important – however, we have probably forgotten some stuff!!! Check out the Week One page for essentials too.

Ancaster is a mixed hall of residence with 272 bed spaces. There are 35 single study rooms, 48 private shared bathrooms, 186 ensuites and 3 disabled rooms. The hall provides three meals per day during term time. During the vacation periods, conferences take place so rooms have to be entirely vacated. If students need to stay, some rooms are available at a certain rate per night. All study bedrooms are fully furnished, and equipped with voice and data points.

What do you get in your room?

Well, pretty basic stuff is provided – but most essentials i.e. chairs, a desk, a single bed, shelves, a table lamp, a wardrobe, a chest of drawers and a bedside table.

What else to bring?

You must complete the Inventory Form immediately at the start of the academic year and return it to the main offices. Be thorough! If you do not, you may be held responsible for any damage that has already occurred in your room or any missing items. If a lamp fails, you can get a replacement from the Porter. Report any other faults as soon as they occur – for example, I broke the toilet seat on a very drunk night – I can’t remember how…but I reported it and that very same day it was fixed! DAMAGE CAUSED BY VISITORS TO YOUR ROOM IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!!!

Bed Linen – One sheet and pillowcase can be exchanged each week, at the foyer linen room, on Wednesday’s between 1.00-2.00pm and 5.00-6.00pm. Most residents use their own duvet covers – but you can also borrow one from the Hall for a £10 returnable deposit.

TV Licenses – The NTVLRO has informed us of a major campaign against student defaulters. Student residences at other Uni’s have been raided! You risk a fine of £1000 if you own a set not specifically licenses in your name for use at this address.

Cleaning – Rooms are cleaned weekly. You may opt out but you will have to complete the necessary form available from your cleaner. If your room is misses, notify the Housekeeping Supervisor. Cleaners are instructed to ALWAYS lock doors – if you go out…take your key!!!

Telephones – The telephones in each room will be permanent. They are Hall property and must not be moved or removed. The sockets will be “live” for internal calls only for a trial period, but thereafter only is you subscribe to NTL’s service. However, phones will still be able to make emergency calls.

What facilities are available around Ancy?

Sky TV
In the JCR – to your left as soon as you walk in the entrance hall, we have got just about every channel imaginable, plus the Premiership season ticket. We also have another TV with DVD player for anyone to use in the Lilac Lounge – in B block – 2nd floor – to your right.

Amusements
In the JCR, you will find a pool table, table football, quiz machines and racing games etc…to help while away all that time you should be spending studying. Newspapers are provided everyday – both quality and trashy – and the all important drinks/chocolate vending!

Laundry
There are many industrial sized washing machines and huge tumble dryers around the hall. These are all set at a reasonable price - £1.20 for a warm wash with colours for example. They are very economical – enough to do several loads in one go, easing the pain!!!

Bar
The bar forms a highly central part of hall life, and Ancy hall in particular. Drinks are cheap and there is always someone you know supping a pint. We hold a range of events based in and around the bar, such as pub quizzes, occasional DJ nights and parties. The campus-14 goers are always seen on a Friday or Saturday dressed in all sorts (the rules are to drink a pint or double in each of the hall bars before making it to the Ark for a last drink). Lethal. Check out the bar page for more info…

Notice Boards
Remember to check out the noticeboards in the JCR to find out what’s going on – particularly with regards to sport, welfare and of course the all important club nights, parties and Karni issues.

Computer Room
If you don’t have your own computer or laptop, or you don’t want to bring yours, we have a computer room – next to A Block in hall. It is open pretty much 24 hours and you can obtain the key from the Porter on duty. There are 4 computers all connected to the University network, plus a laser printer.

Pantrys
Ancaster is full board – i.e. 3 meals a day provided in the canteen – however, most corridors have pantries where you can cook simple food. I.E. Toast, microwave food etc. Basically, we are provided with a fridge, microwave, sink and a few cupboards to store food. You are not allowed fridges or kettles in your room – so they are provided for you.
