Current Research

My research investigates how different groups in the Early Soviet State constructed discourses about workers and the 'working class' following the October Revolution in 1917. This will focus on metalworkers in the period 1917-1921 and use both a central and local perspective. The local perspective will be a case study of Sormovo metalworks in Nizhnii Novgorod. I will not be trying to re-construct some 'reality' of worker experience in the Early Soviet period but to examine and de-construct the discourses about worker experience and identity. The thesis will be split up into 3 key questions:

- How do we 'know' workers?

- How did political agents construct the working class?

- How did political agents attempt to engage and communicate with the working class?
