Current Research

My thesis ''From 'Yellow Ticket' to 'Bourgeois Evil": Female Prostitution in Urban Russia, 1900-1930' explores prostitution as a perceived social and economic problem across the revolutionary divide. I compare legislation and state/philanthropic attempts to 'solve' this problem. Additionally, I contrast how women operated within the sex industry in either period, and explore how sex workers experienced, and reacted against, legislation and policing. My research is principally based on archival material from Moscow and Saint Petersburg. However, I also examine a regional case study of Arkhangel'sk in the Russian North.
