Our research

World-leading research delivering bioscience discoveries for a changing world

Our research addresses key real-world issues in microbial, plant, animal, food and environmental sciences. We have dynamic programmes of fundamental and multi-disciplinary research supported by national and international funders.

We apply our research, knowledge and technology to make lasting improvements to the environment, economy and society. We do this by making sure our research is relevant to our global stakeholders; from businesses, public and third sector organisations and the general public.

REF Results 2021

We have been ranked 10th in the UK for our research quality in the Research Excellence Framework (REF2021) results. We were part of a joint return with the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science (UoA6 Agriculture, Food and Veterinary Science).

The School of Biosciences has seen a significant increase in the proportion of outputs assessed as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ from those submitted to REF2014.

We have been ranked 3rd in the UK for research power according to analysis by Times Higher Education, which takes into account a combination of the quality of our research, its international impact, critical mass and sustainability.

85% of our research is classed as ‘world-leading’ (4*) or ‘internationally excellent'.

Our research environment is 75% ‘world-leading’ and 25% ‘internationally excellent’.
