Operations Management

Module Content:
This module provides a thorough grounding in concepts and principles that are essential for the successful management of operations in contemporary organisations. Module topics include: the role of the operations function and the major variables in managing operations; service operations management, including service systems design and queuing systems; quality concepts and the management of quality; supply chain management concepts including material and information flows, supply chain dynamics, forecasting, sales and operations planning, postponement and mass customisation; lean thinking, lean concepts and process excellence; project management concepts and methods.

Module Aims:
The module aims to provide a thorough grounding in key concepts in contemporary operations. It is taught in a manner appropriate to an MBA audience and draws upon the latest management approaches and thinking. Specifically it aims to develop understanding of:
- the relevance and importance to organisations of high performance operational capabilities;
- the key resources - human, organisational and technological - and the fundamental variables in operations management, as well as their interactions;
- key concepts in the design of effective operational systems for a wide range of environmentts;
- frameworks for addressing major issues in manaing operations;
- the integrative nature of Operations Management.

Module Assessment:
Written Assignment (max. 3,000 words) - chosen from a topic related questions (60%); Written Analysis (max. 1,000 words) on a contemporary OM issue (40%)
