Over the past four weeks, more than 200 participants took part in brush painting sessions funded by Nottingham Confucius Institute as part of our Year of the Dragon celebrations. They were led by local artist Feng-Ru Lee and took place at Lakeside Arts and King’s Meadow Campus.

Wednesday evening sessions from 24 January to 21 February, fan painting sessions at Lakeside Arts on 10-11 February and a lunchtime session at the University King’s Meadow Campus on 21 February saw students, staff, local children and their families all learn something new and exciting.

The general theme this year was mythical creatures, with an  emphasis on dragons and phoenixes, setting the new year tone perfectly.  Pictured on the right are a few of the marvellous art works from the Wednesday evening sessions.  More student artwork can be viewed on our Instagram here.

Participants fed back on how much they enjoyed learning how to brush paint with Chinese brushes, paint and ink on rice paper. Several of them also expressed their gratitude to the Confucius Institute for funding these opportunities to experience a fascinating element of Chinese culture.

Nottingham Confucius Institute is proud to have led Chinese New Year celebrations in Nottingham since 2010. Typical celebratory events led by NCI in partnership with Lake Arts, Nottingham City Council and CSSA include the Chinese New Year Gala, Temple Fair and arts and crafts for children and families. They have undoubtedly become an essential feature on  the local calendar, bringing some much needed fun and joy to the cold months after Christmas.
