24 February saw an enthusiastic audience of over 400 people attend a celebratory concert packed with popular Chinese and Western classics at the Albert Hall in Nottingham.

We were delighted to have internationally renowned guitarist Xuefei Yang join the University Philharmonia to perform the world premiere of Chen Yi’s Concerto “Dreaming of My Hometown” for Guitar and Orchestra. Commissioned by Lakeside Arts with funds from the University’s Cascade programme and the Nottingham Confucius Institute, the new concerto fuses classical western and Chinese musical ideas and styles.

Other pieces played were Li Huanzhi’s Spring Festival Overture, Rodrigo ‘s Concerto de Aranjuez and Beethoven’s Symphony No.5. Each piece received huge rounds of applause.

The concert was organised by Lakeside Arts in partnership with Nottingham Confucius Institute (NCI), marking the end of the Chinese New Year festival period.

NCI were proud to have delivered a host of celebratory events between January and February across three university campuses, Lakeside Arts, Nottingham Central Library, Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club at Trent Bridge and seven local schools. These events reached over 4,000 university staff, students, school children and local residents.
