Friday 24 November saw over 40 UoN staff, students and local residents come together for the last NCI Mandarin Corner event of the Autumn Term. The theme of the session was Chinese Music and it began with a brief introduction to a variety of traditional Chinese musical instruments including bamboo flute, xun, hulusi, suona and guzheng, followed by some excellent performances by University of Nottingham student musicians. Participants were then invited to ask questions, withsome opting to have a go at playing the instruments.
Feedback was very positive, with several describing how enjoyable the session was and praising the talents of the musicians.
The 90 minute event buzzed with excitement, with regular rounds of applause and laughter filling the venue. A short video capturing some highlights of the evening can be seen here.
Two other Mandarin Corner events from the Autumn Term, with themes on “Chinese Knot Making” and “Chinese Kung Fu” , also brought some fascinating aspects of Chinese culture to life for people. Click on the links to see some of the highlights.

汉语角|“音”缘际会，“乐”动你心
2023年11月24日，本年度秋季学期最后一期汉语角——中国音乐如约而至，40余名中外学生参与其中。
首先，主持人带领大家简单了解了关于中国音乐的基本知识，同时和大家一起探讨了对于中国音乐的认识和印象，大家各抒己见，气氛热烈。紧接着，各种中国传统乐器闪亮登场，让人眼前一亮。
笛声悠扬，且听竹语。
笛子的演奏者为大家介绍了笛子的组成、含义及演奏指法，还现场用笛子为大家演奏了具有代表性的中外曲子，引得现场观众掌声不断。
一首埙乐，穿越千年。
“八音”之一的埙，作为中国音乐的精粹，几千年来就一直倔强地传承、存续着。主讲人通过一个埙乐的演奏视频，结合着深入浅出的讲解，带领大家穿越回千年之前，体悟空灵之音。
嘹亮入云端，沉沉漫深谷。
主持人通过《百鸟朝凤》的演奏视频，生动地向大家展示了唢呐的魅力。唢呐淳朴、刚柔相融的音色令人诧异、感动，让人仿佛置身于百鸟之中。
小小葫芦丝，悠扬中国乐。
演奏者现场用葫芦丝为大家演奏了一曲中国歌曲，曲调悠扬婉转，仿佛整个世界都沉浸在一片宁静与美好之中，赢得了大家的阵阵掌声。
声声慢，心弦动。
主讲人通过通俗易懂的语言让大家了解古筝的各部分组成之后，便开始为大家演奏古筝。当手轻抚筝弦，拨弄出声声涟漪，我们仿佛听到了来自千百年前的呼唤。“弹筝奋逸响，心声妙入神”。筝声一起，四座寂静，大家久久回味，不绝于耳。
走进乐器，亲自体验
听完主讲人的介绍，大家再也按捺不住想要亲自体验中国传统乐器的心情，纷纷找到各位老师，认真地学习如何演奏中国传统乐器，现场气氛热烈。
本次汉语角活动让中外学生对中国音乐以及中国传统乐器有了更深的了解，同时也进一步激发了大家对中国传统文化的兴趣。
