Children having fun with blow painting cherry blossom

On Saturday 17th June Nottingham Confucius Institute (NCI) was proud to be one of several departments participating in ‘Wonder’, the University of Nottingham’s largest community engagement event - on a glorious sunny day University Park became a land of discovery and adventure with hundreds of free activities designed to inspire curious minds of all ages.

NCI set up a ‘China Corner’ in the Sir Clive Granger Building with activities catering for a broad range of interest in Chinese culture. The morning consisted of two talks on Chinese medicine: one on ways of relieving stress with Chinese massage and the other on using acu-points to help improve health and well-being. This was followed by a Taichi taster session, where three Taichi masters and practitioners introduced and demonstrated Taichi. The afternoon was filled with fun games for children, ranging from origami, blow painting, basketball shooting, chopstick challenges and ring throwing.

Among all the games, blow painting proved to be the most popular. This involved children blowing a drop of ink on paper in different directions to form branches and then decorating the branches with paint to form cherry blossom. This was a very novel activity for the children who clearly had a lot of fun whilst exploring their imagination and artistic abilities.

With dedicated effort from NCI staff and volunteers, the China Corner ran from 10:30 to 16:30 and was visited by hundreds of local residents and children. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive and many thanked NCI for providing a fascinating glimpse into Chinese culture.
