Biography

I work as a HE Lecturer in contemporary literature with a specialism in postcolonial literature, world literature, and classical reception. At Nottingham, I my teaching focuses on contemporary world literature. My modules include "Studying Literature" (Level 4), "One and Unequal World Literature" (Level 6) and "British Literature Post-1950s" (Level 7). Previously, I worked as an Associate Lecturer for the University of Warwick, working for the English Department, Physics, the Warwick Business School and the International Foundations Programme. Between 2019 and 2023, I've designed and delivered my own module on literary analysis (for the Warwick IFP) I also worked as a Lecturer in Academic Skills and Research Methods at Askham Bryan University Centre in York.

Expertise Summary

My research explores the intersection between classical reception and memory studies, conceptualising 'mnemonic reception' as a mode of adaptation especially prominent in modern and contemporary texts. My monograph Classical Memories: The Underworld in Irish and Caribbean Literature (DeGruyter, 2021) and edited collection A Quest for Remembrance: The Underworld in Classic and Modern Literature (Routledge, 2020) explore this in detail.

Teaching Summary

I am interested in teaching modules on modern and contemporary literature, reception and adaptation studies, classical reception, mythology, memory, media studies, and/or world systems.

Current Research

I am currently in the process of co-editing a collection of chapters on Memories of Antiquity, under contract with DeGruyer's Media and Cultural Memory series. In it, we explore the way in which classical narratives have been textually and visually remembered across history, starting from memories of antiquity in antiquity to memories of Atlantis in contemporary ludic podcasts.

Past Research

My past research has focused on classical reception in modern and contemporary literature, exploring the ways in which textual engagements with classical antiquity can be intentionally framed as decontextualised, schematic, and memory-driven instead of becoming a continuation of a classical tradition. As case studies, I have primarily focused on postcolonial authors like Seamus Heaney, Michael Longley, Eavan Boland, Derek Walcott, and Wilson Harris. An example of this can be found in my article 'Resurrecting Antiquity: Memories of Medea in the Caribbean', published in the journal Memory Studies.

Future Research

My future research will further explore the relationship between digital media, classical reception, and memory studies, focusing on the way in which digital mediascapes facilitate increasingly memory-driven engagements with antiquity. An article I am currently working on, in collaboration with Dr. Karen Borg Cardona, will explore the reception of classical referents on the 'Dark Academia' online aesthetic.
