The School of English has over 35 full-time members of academic staff all of whom are research active. Their expertise embraces a wide spectrum of specialisms and includes:

  • research which crosses traditional divisions within the discipline (for example, between the study of linguistics and literature)
  • research that involves other disciplines (staff and postgraduates are currently working on research projects that involve collaborations with the Schools of Education, Nursing Studies, Psychology, Computer Science and IT, Geography, History and Art History, and the Departments of Music, Archaeology and Critical Theory)
  • research that engages with other kinds of institutions, such as local councils, libraries, and museums.

Our research collaborations are fostered via the School’s Research Centres and Institute who host regular conferences and symposia.

The School welcomes applications from research students and post-doctoral students in areas of research relevant to individual staff expertise as well as those related to the School’s research clusters, centres and institute.
