Current Research

Supporting research for a new translation of 'The Saga of the Earls of Orkney' bringing together evidence of archaeology and place-names to transform our understanding of the Viking and Norse periods in northern Scotland and to energise both further interdisciplinary research and public engagement in this field. According to the saga, a formidable woman called Ragna owned both North Ronaldsay and Papay in the twelfth century, and she has given her name to the project.

The project will integrate recent and current archaeological work into the annotations and apparatus of the translation through fieldwork and knowledge exchange. Integrate up-to-date place-name interpretations into the annotation and apparatus of the translation based on a database gathering all relevant name-forms and associated information. Engage with local communities and other stakeholders in the Viking and Norse history and heritage of northern Scotland. Produce materials suitable for public engagement by both residents and visitors to northern Scotland, based on co-operative work with local residents and organisations, especially the three small islands of Fair Isle, North Ronaldsay and Papa Westray (Papay).
