Background
In the UK, East Midlands Science Enterprise Network
(EMSEN) has emerged as one of the focal points and champions of
‘enterprise teaching and research in HE’. This agenda
was initially the focus of the Science Enterprise Challenge strand
of funding and is now subsumed under the Higher Education Innovation
Fund, continuing to be a strategic national priority area.
EMSEN is led by the recognised centre of excellence
in the region, UNIEI at the University of Nottingham. It has the
proven track record of excellence, is bigger and better resourced
and has wider networks. It is able to offer a strategic leadership
role which is welcomed and appreciated, without exception, by the
partners.
Through this leadership role Nottingham is able
to support the diversity of universities in the region. In particular
the skills, knowledge, experiences and abilities of the practitioners
are enriched through the networks that the University plugs EMSEN
into at international, national, regional or even local levels.
Notable examples include the UKSEC network and the Cambridge-MIT
initiatives.
In the period 2002-2004 the major collective outcomes
of EMSEN were:
- 4,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students in learning about
enterprise and innovation
- 70 ‘real life’ business projects and over 120 students
in enterprises
- 120 members of academic and administrative staff in professional
practice programmes
- 200 innovative business ideas and the formation or incubation
of over 30 spin out companies
- Student enterprise competitions in all partner institutions
- Active involvement of over 1,000 regionally based businesses.

EMSEN 2004-2006
In July 2004 UNIEI led a successful bid via EMSEN to secure a further
£1.3 million of funding from the Higher Education Innovation
Fund 2 (HEIF 2). The funding is awarded to support knowledge transfer
from universities to business and the wider community.
EMSEN is chaired by Bob Gibbs, Director of Development, UNIEI;
Nazia Rehman, UNIEIlab/EMSEN Secretary, services the network; and
Dr Simon Mosey, Deputy Director, UNIEI, inputs on a variety of areas
including the Network of Practitioners and WIN2. Other UNIEI staff
are utilized as appropriate.
The HEIF 2 resources have been divided between partner HEIs that
are used to build on their strengths and a central resource that
provides central functions and support. As well as acting as the
communications hub, UNIEI delivers from the centre the following:
- Higher Education Innovation Network - EMSEN Advisory Group,
Network of Practitioners and Research Group.
- Knowledge Transfer training events and Master Classes - regional,
EU and international, including access to CMI and UKSEC events.
- WIN2 Assessments and Development - an ideas assessment tool
with curriculum and commercial application potential.
- Regional Integration and RES/FRESA (now RSPP) and touch point
events with ‘regional projects’
International partnerships and expert support, bringing national
and international expertise in to the region.
Overall EMSEN has increased the scale of enterprise delivery and
operation in a remarkably short time. It has provided a catalyst
to curriculum innovations as well as providing a focus for the exchange
of knowledge. Along with other successes in the region, EMSEN makes
a major contribution towards increasing the long-term competitiveness
of the East Midlands economy.
