The Year Abroad
Welcome to the French and Francophone Studies Year Abroad website.
If you are studying the French language as part of your degree, the 3rd year of your course is a year abroad. This is an integral and compulsory part of your degree and also an exciting element of your course. You will either have to spend a full academic year, or part of the year in France or a francophone country.
If you are studying French Single Honours then you will spend a full academic year abroad. If you are studying two languages to final year level, then you will have to divide your year between France/French speaking country and the country of your other chosen language of study. If your degree course consists of three languages to final year level, (such as BA in Modern Language Studies), you will be required to spend a minimum of four weeks in France or a francophone country.
You are given three options for your Year Abroad. You can either study at a university, work as a language assistant or undertake a work placement.
The aim of the Year Abroad is for you to immerse yourself into either a French or francophone culture for the maximum time possible. This will significantly improve not only your spoken French, but will increase your sensitivity to register, build your vocabulary, improve your comprehension and reading skills, and familiarise yourself more generally with the many and varied aspects of another culture.
We hope this website gives you the information you are looking for, however, please do not hesitate to contact the Year Abroad Placements Officer if you have any further queries.
