John Thomas Andrews

BA Geography, 1959

John AndrewsJohn's career at the University of Colorado Boulder, has involved the Quaternary history of ice sheets in both hemispheres but with a focus on the North American, Greenland, Antarctic, and Iceland ice sheets.

The research has involved both field and ship-based expeditions with an emphasis on the chronology of events, the glacial isostatic impact of large ice sheets on crustal response, and the impact of ice sheet collapse (Heinrich events) on sediment delivery to the North Atlantic. This has included some of the first attempts to map the pattern of retreat and crustal rebound of the Laurentide Ice Sheet.

The observational aspect of John's research has been balanced by collaboration with colleagues to model the global relative sea level response, the changes in ice sheet mass, and the rate of sea level fall associated with glacial inception.

Peter McGuckin

BSc Geography, 1977

Peter McGuckinFollowing postgraduate studies in Landscape Architecture, Peter focused initially on urban regeneration and land reclamation for local government before joining a multi-national environmental consultancy where typical projects included the design of major business parks.

Setting up Insite Environments in 1992, several large-scale masterplanning projects followed including regenerating Newcastle Quayside as a new business quarter. An interest in computing acquired at Nottingham was also reawakened and the company went on to pioneer the application of graphics technology - particularly Virtual Reality - to environmental impact assessment, improving the accuracy and predictability of visual impact assessment. Insite's real-time 3D modelling has since underpinned the planning and design of several UK infrastructure projects including National Grid transmission schemes and major UK airports, ports and tunnels.
