Research Degrees
The University of Nottingham is a leading research university, and the School of Geography has a strong international research profile.
There are postgraduate research studentships available annually. Details of current awards can be found in this site.
The School currently has around 40 full-time postgraduate research students, and 15 registered for part-time PhD study. Students come from a range of countries and there is a thriving international research student community in the School and University. Each student is provided with their own desk space, and has access to the School's Graduate Computing Laboratory and the wider university computing and library facilities. Photocopying and telephone facilities are also provided. Each student normally has two research supervisors from within the School. The School has an established Research Training programme for new postgraduate students, designed to introduce researchers to key intellectual debates within their field, and to provide basic transferable research skills.
Postgraduates are integrated into the research community of the School through participation in research seminars given by visiting speakers, and research workshops given by members of the School. There is an active postgraduate research group in each of the School's four key research areas.
Cultural and Historical Geography
Economic Worlds
Environment and Society
Geosciences
Individual postgraduate research projects may of course cross over between research groups, for example in fields such as environmental management, and students may have supervisors drawn from more than one group. You are welcome to contact potential supervisors directly by email to discuss your research ideas.
Postgraduate research in the School is funded by UK government research councils, including AHRC, ESRC, and NERC, by governments of other countries, commercial and non-governmental organisations, and from within the University of Nottingham itself. Scholarships funded by the School are normally advertised each year.
Enquiries on any aspect of postgraduate research should be addressed to the Postgraduate Administrator, School of Geography, Sir Clive Granger Building, University of Nottingham, Nottingham NG7 2RD, UK (email: pgadmissions@geography.nottingham.ac.uk).
Applications for a research place within the School should be made on a standard University of Nottingham application form, more information is available in the Admissions section.
