Electron Microscopy

Equipment

Our electron microscopy equipment includes:

  • FEI Tecnai 12 Biotwin TEM with up to 120kV and x300k magnification. It has high contrast lenses which are ideal for looking at nanoparticles, unstained samples and immunogold labelling. It is equipped with analysis and auto-montaging software and is currently being upgraded for cryo-TEM and tomography software.
  • Leica EM UC6/FC6 - a cryoultramicrotome used for preparation of frozen EM sections. <
  • Sample preparation for cells, tissues and cell-material samples is carried out for SEM and TEM using a range of equipment, including ultramicrotomes, sputter coaters etc.
  • The Unit shares access to a Jeol JEM1010 TEM and a Jeol JSM840 with the Schools of Biology and NHS.

Applications

Our electron microscopy work covers a wide range of disciplines and sample types including:

  • Visualisation of nanoparticles,
  • Preparation of polymer samples for electron microscopy using conventional/cryoultramicrotomy,
  • Correlative immunocytochemistry using TEM and confocal microscopy,
  • Quantitative analyses of cells/organelles/membrane specialisations under different conditions, and
  • Ultrastructure of tissue-engineering constructs.
