The fourth son of the 4th Duke of Newcastle, Lord William entered Christ Church College, Oxford, in 1833, and graduated B.A. in 1836.
The following year, following an indiscreet affair, he was sent on the Grand Tour with his brothers, Lord Charles (1813-1894) and Lord Thomas (1813-1882).
He died unmarried in 1850.
