The Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies is the joint top-ranking research department nationally. We teach Spanish and Portuguese language and we cover Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Spanish America and Lusophone Africa. We offer literature, history, cultural studies, film and visual culture, from the Renaissance to the present day. Our staff and postgraduates research in all these areas.
- The Midlands3Cities Doctoral Training Partnership will be awarding 410 PhD studentships over a five-year period to excellent research students in the arts and humanities. The DTP, a collaboration between the universities of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent, Leicester, De Montfort, Birmingham and Birmingham City, provides research candidates with cross-institutional mentoring, expert supervision including cross-institutional supervision where appropriate, subject specific and generic training, and professional support in preparing for a career.
- Matt Watts, third year French, Spanish and Portuguese for CLAS and Megan Caney from Murray Park school in Derby, won the school's prize.
- The Midlands is set to become a centre of excellence for a new generation of highly-skilled arts and humanities researchers, thanks to a multimillion pound partnership between six of the region's universities.
