Understanding how the protein Survivin plays diverse roles in research

Survivin exhibits divergent functions. It regulates cell proliferation and cell death. Its expression is also distinctive: it is prominently expressed in embryonal development, absent in most normal, and upregulated at the cancer stage. Understanding how survivin plays diverse roles is very important for my project.

During my undergraduate studies in Biochemistry, I realised how important it is to study biomolecules that eventually form a life. And understanding these molecules will help us enhance current ‘prevention and cure’ strategies for various diseases. I decided to pursue PhD studies so that I can improve my knowledge and contribute to the drug and discovery discipline.

The cohort learning style provides an opportunity to make new friends, especially if you are an international student.

Throughout the year, the DTP arranged cohort-based activities and training. I developed knowledge and skills from two different lab groups during lab rotations. I went to BBDTP Amplify Mentor Training where I learnt about the role and developed strong cohort dynamics. I look forward to my time at the program.

The DTP provides training opportunities that further prepare us for post-PhD. This includes PIPS (Professional Internship for PhD Students) that allow us to gain non-academic work experience and expand our network.
