Hannah's research

To understand the molecular basis of antipsychotic drugs using a range of imaging and pharmacological techniques.

Antipsychotic drugs are used to treat several neuropsychiatric disorders where psychosis is a primary symptom. Unfortunately, these drugs are associated with several side effects including motor symptoms and endocrine disorders. More recently developed antipsychotic drugs show reduced side effects although the reason behind this is unclear. My project aims to understand the molecular basis for this phenomenon to aid in the drug discovery process.

I really enjoy the collaborative research environment at Nottingham.

I came to the University of Nottingham to study medicine. I was fascinated by the scientific underpinning of the physiological processes that occur in the human body. My bachelor's degree in biochemistry sparked my interest in therapeutics at the molecular level. A summer studentship at the Institute of Cell Signalling gave me the lab experience that I enjoyed. I was also able to meet other PhD students at Nottingham who gave me an insight into the life as a postgraduate researcher. This experience inspired me to start a PhD to explore molecular pharmacology further.

I am looking forward to a professional internship placement offered by the DTP, where I hope to gain experience in the industry. This will help shape my plans for the future.

The lab rotation offered by the DTP at the start of the programme, is a wonderful way to gain experience in new techniques and transferable lab skills. The academic and pastoral support from my supervisors and the DTP team has been invaluable. I often discuss my project with fellow researchers within my immediate lab group and across disciplines, that results in several thought-provoking conversations. This enables me to view my research from a unique perspective and to develop new lines of enquiry.
