Nagamani Bora Staff Biography
Course director
I am the Lead and Director for biotechnology degree programmes. Prior to this I worked as a Senior Lecturer in Microbial Technology at De Montfort University, as a Senior Research Fellow at Aston University on EPSRC funded project between industry and academia. I have also worked as a Senior Scientist at Avecia Biotechnology, developing therapeutic proteins, and as a Research Associate at Newcastle University understanding the diversity and dynamics of starter cultures on European smear ripened cheeses.
I graduated with a genetics and biochemistry degree from India and continued to specialise in industrial biotechnology in my MSc and PhD (2000-2005) from the University of Newcastle, UK.

What are your career highlights?
My career has been quite rewarding in terms translating knowledge to application in biotechnology. I have engaged in commercialisation and knowledge transfer activities in the development of therapeutics in collaboration with industries. Sharing this knowledge with world experts, winning prizes and being invited as a speaker at international conferences have been some of my career highlights.
What's the most rewarding part of being course director?
The most rewarding part of being the director of this course is being recognised for contributions I have made to teaching and learning, as well as the employability and personal development of students. I was nominated for the ‘Lord Dearing Award’ and ‘Inspirational contribution to University of Nottingham’ for supporting students throughout their journey and helping them in their careers.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I am a very enthusiastic, friendly person and enjoy exploration. I believe everyday is a learning process and there is no end to learning. I am forever exploring by travelling, trying new recipes, reading and socialising.
