Sustainability and Societal Impact Fellows celebrate a year of impact
Students from across all levels of Nottingham University Business School recently came together to celebrate the achievements of the Sustainability and Societal Impact (SSI) Fellows Programme 2024-25.
The end-of-year celebration, held during Sustainability Action Week 2025, was an opportunity to reflect on the Fellows' contributions to the school’s sustainability and societal impact agenda through a wide range of student-led projects.
The celebration recognised the leadership and support of several key figures from the University of Nottingham:
- Professor Andrew Bacon (Associate Dean for External Engagement at Nottingham University Business School), Richard Profit (Professor of Practice at Nottingham University Business School) and Anne Touboulic (Associate Professor in Operations Management at Nottingham University Business School), who have championed and shaped the programme.
- David Park (Dean of Nottingham University Business School) delivered an inspiring speech and presented the Fellows with gifts to recognise their contributions.
- Steve Martin (Honorary Professor in Learning for Sustainability), who has supported the Fellows throughout the year.
- Muhammad Ali (Director of Environmental Sustainability) also attended the event.
Faisal Aljuhani, a PhD student at the Haydn Green Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, shared his experience of the programme:
"The SSI Fellows Programme helped me to bridge my PhD research with real-world sustainability practices. I contributed to curriculum analysis by mapping sustainability content and SDG alignment across Business School modules - such as those in the MBA programme. This hands-on experience deepened my understanding of responsible education and gave me a voice in shaping impactful learning within the Business School community.”
The event coincided with Sustainability Action Week, which featured activities such as foraging walks around Jubilee Campus and herbal tea-making workshops. These were hosted by the Edible Campus Project, based in the Business School and delivered in collaboration with Wilding Campuses, a university-wide sustainability initiative. The hands-on sessions encouraged students to connect with nature, supported wellbeing, and highlighted sustainable practices for everyday living.
The Fellows also presented at the University of Nottingham’s annual Teaching and Learning Conference, where they showcased the programme’s achievements and reinforced the importance of embedding sustainability and societal impact across teaching, learning, and research.
The SSI Fellows Programme continues to empower students to become active contributors to sustainable change and promote a culture of responsibility, collaboration, and innovation at Nottingham University Business School.
