Dr Gary Chapman is an Associate Professor in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Nottingham University Business School. He is also the Course Director for MSc Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Management.
His research interests include innovation in new and established ventures, government and business support for innovative and new ventures, organisational diversity, and knowledge exchange and entrepreneurship within universities and academia. He primarily uses quantitative approaches in his research. Gary welcomes inquiries from prospective PhD students in the areas of innovation, entrepreneurship and strategy, and is open to discussions around research collaborations aligned with his research interests.
His work has been published in leading management journals, including, Research Policy, British Journal of Management, Technovation, R&D Management, Industry and Innovation, Journal of Technology Transfer, and Journal of Business Venturing Insights, among others.
His paper on workforce diversity and university invention was a Finalist for the Best Paper Award in the Technology and Innovation Management (TIM) Division of the Academy of Management 2023. His paper on female-founded university spinouts won the Best Paper Award in the Gender and Enterprise Track of ISBE 2024.
His work has received external grant funding from the British Academy and UKRI, amongst others, and he has engaged in consultancy based on his research.
He is currently a Consulting Editor for the International Small Business Journal.
He has extensive experience of teaching at undergraduate, postgraduate (taught and research), and executive levels, and has undertaken a number of administrative and service roles.
