Research Topic:
Research Commercialisation in Transition Economies: Understanding the Relationship Between Entrepreneurial Competencies of Academic Entrepreneurs and Acquisition of Public Funding

Research Details:
The study will analyse the relationship between academic spin-offs and public funding by following the underpinnings of the entrepreneurial competency theory (Vohora et al., 2004; Rasmussen et al., 2011). From a theoretical perspective, the study, therefore, extends the theory of entrepreneurial competencies by paying more attention to joint impact, the interplay between entrepreneurial competencies of academic spin-offs and public funding. In doing so, the following questions were formulated: How do entrepreneurial competencies determine the securing of public funding in the context of a transition economy? In the pursuit of public financing, how do entrepreneurs attempt to develop competencies from the perspective of universities, public research institutes and research and production centres? These questions will allow us to trace, using the particular grant application process as an example, how academic entrepreneurs develop certain competencies that eventually let them secure managers for commercialisation and investment from outside, eventually making them eligible for the public grant application. Additionally, the study offers the transition economy perspective on academic spin-offs, which is underrepresented in the studies (Fisch et al., 2016). Finally, in academic spin-off research, it is commonly assumed that universities are the main organisations involved in creating spin-offs (Mathisen and Rasmussen, 2019). However, academic research is also conducted by research institutes (Moray and Clarysse, 2005), which are crucial players in public research in various countries. Therefore, the research will highlight the performance of academic spin-offs started by universities and research institutes.
