Dr Maria Karafyllia is Assistant Professor in Strategy at Nottingham University Business School, University of Nottingham, UK. Prior to joining the University of Nottingham, she held academic positions at Anglia Ruskin University, the University of Birmingham, and the University of Vaasa in Finland. She received her PhD from the University of Glasgow and MSc from the University of Manchester. Her research interests include open innovation, business models, circular economy, paradoxes of strategy and innovation, unlearning, and domestic market effects on internationalisation. Her JPIM article "Perspective: Leveraging Open Innovation through Paradox" won the Albert L. Page Award for Outstanding Professional Contribution.

BAE Systems (Operations) Ltd, PI - Prof Jon McKechnie, Co-Is - Dr Alistair Speidel, Prof Chris Gerada, Prof Christopher Tuck, Dr Davide De Focatiis, Dr Maria Karafyllia, Prof Michael Johnson, Prof Svetan Ratchev, Dr Tom Turner, T Zero, Jan 2025 - Dec 2027, £1,500,000.
The project aims to develop a life cycle-informed design approach for aerospace systems, enabling the rapid assessment of cost and environmental impacts related to incorporating recycled materials from manufacturing, end-of-service aircraft, and other sectors.

The project involved collaborative research and knowledge exchange workshops with companies and industry associations. Its purpose was to develop a business case for the Foundation Industries, encouraging them to adopt strategies focused on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), circularity, and business model innovation.
