Peter Ho is Professor in Development Economics specializing in institutions, sustainability and property rights of land, housing and resources. Prior to this he was, amongst others, Research Professor at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), Full Professor at Leiden University & Director of the Modern East Asia Research Centre, and Full Professor at Groningen University & Director of the Centre for Development Studies since 2003.
Ho is listed in the World Top 2% of Most-cited Scientists (Career & Annual Index) and is widely published in leading journals of development, planning and environment. He published 12 books with, amongst others, Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press and Wiley-Blackwell. He is recognised for his theory on the "credibility thesis" and "embedded activism."
Ho has been twice awarded by the European Research Council: an ERC Advanced Grant preceded by an ERC Consolidator Grant. The ERC Review Panel described Ho as: "a world renowned scholar with an impressive set of publications and awards to his name" and "a leading thinker with continuous effort on theoretical and methodological levels to go beyond the state of the art." Prof. Ho achieved the William Kapp Prize for Evolutionary and Political Economy and the China Rural Development Award.
Ho is Series Editor at Cambridge University Press, co-founded and chairs the International Conference on Agriculture and Rural Development (ICARDC), and serves on various SSCI-rated journal editorial boards, including but not limited to, Land Use Policy, Conservation and Society, Journal of Peasant Studies, China Rural Economics (CASS), and formerly, Biodiversity Science (CAS).
Ho has overseen large-scale research projects with a budget of over 6 million Euros supported by various international and national funding agencies. He has given close to 200 interviews, which have included USA Today, BBC World Updates, the Dutch and Belgian Eight O' Clock News, and American PBS. Prof. Ho has acted as advisor to members of Parliament and Cabinet of The Netherlands, including the Prime Minister and various Ministers, and also serves or has served on advisory commissions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Natural Resources, and Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment.
